Fire services are well know around the world for the work that they do. However, it is easy to consider their role as simply fire fighting. Many fire services do much, much more than that. There is hazadous material (HAZAMAT), Rescue, Urban Search and Rescue, etc. Added to the traditional view, there are also fire fighters in other agencies/sectors such as aviation, rail, parks, national parks, state forests and - in some cases - local government. In fact and regrettably, there are too many to list here. In Australia, volunteer fire fighters form the vast majority of our fire fighter numbers (male and female). So, even if you have a career in another field, you can still become a fire fighter and contribute to the community's resource pool for emergencies and disasters. |

All police forces in Australia perform a range of non-traditional policing and law enforcement roles in their duty to protect the community. Police are frequently the first to respond to emergencies and take on many tasks like evacuations, overall site management and, in some states, rescue services. In most cases, senior members of a police force are the controllers of emergency situations or are responsible for providing coordination of support to combat agencies. Members of the community will often turn to the police first for help and guidance during disasters. |

The State and Territorial Emergency Services consist of some permanent staff and thousands of volunteers who primarily respond to flood, storm and tsunami events. However, the range of involvement extends far beyond these events to include road, specialist and general rescue; search and rescue; and, other support services to a host of other agencies. |

Marine rescue services are often volunteers who support and supplement the permanent services, such as the Water Police of our various jurisdictions. If it was not for the permanent and volunteer members of several organisations, who patrol the beaches, waterways, coastlines and farther out in the seas of our very large nation, it would be a certainty many more lives would be lost than there currently are and that far more property damage would occur than it currently does. And, still we need more of this type of rescue asset. |

At some stage in someone's life, they would have had an involvement with an ambulance service. We really don't need to say much about this one. They are the most trusted profession. And, every single minute one of their members saves a life. You can't live without them. |
